Time magazine is running a version of its website that only AI crawlers see, and that version carries advertising. Sponsored content goes to assistant crawlers including ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, while Google’s standard search crawler receives the same HTML shown to ordinary visitors. German software developer Vincent Schmalbach found the setup while examining the versions of Time articles delivered to crawlers; the pages he pulled carried sponsored material for Ally Bank, including marketing claims and FAQ-style answers to common banking questions. The Register replicated the findings using crawler simulation tools.
“There is now a layer of TIME.com written entirely for machines, and the humans who read the site have no idea it exists or what is being said to the models on their behalf,” Schmalbach wrote on his blog. Time began converting pages into AI-friendly formats in June 2026 through a partnership with adtech company Mobian. The two call the format “agent ads.” Ally Bank and the Project Management Institute are the first advertisers, with more expected.
This sits a step past GEO. Generative engine optimization works to raise the odds that an AI system retrieves and cites a brand’s content; serving crawlers their own edition changes what there is to retrieve. “When you influence ChatGPT, you’re influencing potentially all of ChatGPT,” Mobian CEO and co-founder Jonah Goodhart told Digiday. “If ChatGPT changes what it says about [a brand], it’s massive, and it’s more than any one campaign could ever do. With a human, you influence one person.”
Search ads are labeled. Sponsored social posts are labeled. Copy written for a crawler and absorbed into a generated answer carries no marker at all, and the person reading that answer has no way to tell that a brand paid for part of it. If the format catches on, other publishers will sell crawler-only inventory too, and optimizing for people and optimizing for models become separate jobs. Whether the second one gets a disclosure is a question nobody has had to answer yet.
