A new generative AI experiment called Halftime cooked up a peculiar cameo for Coca-Cola inside an old episode of “Suits”—without ever rolling film. Created in just 24 hours at an xAI hackathon by three college students, Halftime inserts digital product placements into TV scenes by building entirely new AI-generated moments. Instead of a traditional cutaway ad, the show’s footage is extended to include a moment where a character sips a Coke before returning to the action—none of which ever appeared in the show’s original cut. The concept nods to existing AI-insertion tools like Rembrand, but Halftime kicks it up by fabricating new content altogether.
While Elon Musk’s xAI gave the team a thumbs-up as a contest winner, the internet had more mixed feelings. Critics on X called out the awkwardness of the Coke cameo—likening it to a “Wayne’s World” parody—and worried about AI slapping soulless brand pauses into character-driven stories. The demo in question is a bit rough around the edges, thanks in part to the tight hackathon timeline, but that hasn’t stopped it from sparking debate around how far brands should go with digital meddling.
Clunky or not, the concept exploded online. The short Halftime demo managed to rack up over 18 million views on X. Whether this AI approach takes off or lands in the uncanny valley for good, it’s clear there’s a growing appetite (or at least curiosity) for ad tech that rewrites the show instead of just pausing it.
