From Janky Britney to 93% Gains: How Asana’s CMO Is Doing AI Right

At SaaStr Annual + AI Summit 2025, Asana CMO Shannon Duffy shared how her team hit a staggering 93% efficiency boost through daily AI use—after a few missteps that included a memorable A.I.-generated Britney Spears moment gone very wrong. Key to success? Starting small: automating low-stakes tasks in planning, content, and reporting instead of going full sci-fi out of the gate. Asana’s research with Anthropic backs it up: marketers who use AI daily outperform monthly dabblers by over 50 percentage points in effectiveness.

Beyond the tech, Duffy addressed the human hang-ups. Nearly 40% of marketers fear AI will tank their reputation or job. So instead of forcing adoption, Asana baked AI usage into promotion conversations—”How have you scaled yourself with AI?” became a performance metric. Results followed: content producer Steph cut weeks of work down to hours with an AI editorial assistant, while Ethan went from SDR to chief AI evangelist by customizing outbound emails and reshaping predictive sales models.

Duffy’s biggest regrets? Not updating the org chart and review criteria early, assuming early adopters = AI champions (spoiler: they don’t), and that time a lack of context turned prompt engineering into performance art.

Missteps aside, Duffy is bullish on the future of people and AI working together. “AI is going to make people more productive. It will transform small teams, individual contributors, small organizations into powerhouses. It will completely level the playing field,” she concluded.
