New virtual reality experience brings an epic medieval adventure to life in London

Fever is adding another stamp to its London “VR expeditions” passport with The Last Stronghold: An Epic Medieval Adventure, launching 12 March 2026 at W12 Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush. Built by Excurio with France’s Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN), it uses free-roam VR to drop visitors inside medieval Carcassonne—a UNESCO-listed fortress city—at its early-14th-century peak. Tickets are sold exclusively via the Fever app/website, with a waitlist already open, which is a tidy bit of owned-channel demand capture.

The hook isn’t just sightseeing; it’s story-first immersion. Guests follow two characters, Simon and Agnès, against a backdrop of royal control and the creeping threat of the Inquisition, while physically moving through ramparts, gates, markets, and “off-limits” corners of the stronghold. The experience leans into interaction (combat training, night watch, exploring noble residences) across a ~45-minute runtime, with a recommended age of 10+. Fever’s Alex Winterbotham sums up the sensory ambition: “The experience plays to the strengths of the VR free-roam format… allowing audiences to smell rebellion in the air as time flies by.”

For brands and cultural marketers, the interesting bit is the partnership model: Centre des Monuments Nationaux positions VR as a complementary access layer for audiences who may never get to Carcassonne, while Excurio calls it their “most ambitious” project creatively, narratively, and technically. Fever’s larger play is to turn London into a multi-stop VR travel hub—Carcassonne now sits alongside Machu Picchu: Journey to the Lost City—which sets up repeat visitation and cross-sell opportunities the way theme parks do, just with fewer churros and more headsets.

Two figures in medieval attire stand on a hillside, overlooking a distant castle surrounded by forest, under a cloudy sky.
